Best BJJ Gi for Women: The Ultimate Buyer’s Guide

I’ll preface this by saying: I’m not a woman, but I did the research for you! When looking for a BJJ gi, women have it a bit harder than men. I’ve consulted my fellow female black belts for tips and recommendations when it comes to the best women’s gis and supplemented with stuff I found during researching and reading countless reddit threads.

First and foremost, you may be wondering if you require a gi that is particularly tailored to women in BJJ. No, you don’t need one, but it’s more comfortable if you can get one.

If you already own a BJJ gi in male size, and it doesn’t fit you too badly, you can just train in it. Almost no one will be able to tell the difference. Female bodies, on the other hand, differ from male bodies in several significant ways (surprise! :D), and therefore female gis are designed to fit the female form a bit better.

FUJI Women’s Pink Blossom Jiu-Jitsu Kimono

No products found.

The FUJI Women’s Pink Blossom Jiu-Jitsu Kimono is a great choice for anyone looking for a BJJ Gi that is designed specifically for women. With its simple look and feel, this kimono is comfortable to wear and built to last. The cherry blossom designs on both shoulders are a nice touch, and the contrast stitching adds a bit of personality. The belt is included for kid’s sizes, making it a great choice for beginners and experienced practitioners alike.

The FUJI Women’s Pink Blossom Jiu-Jitsu Kimono provides confidence and comfort while training as well as supporting other women in the community. Standard benefits such as being approved by world-renowned organizations and made to last with heavy-duty daily training make this kimono a great choice for anyone looking for a BJJ Gi.

  • This gi is super cute. It’s cuter than the picture. You can barely see the detailing in the picture, but there is a small flower on the jacket and pink stitching on the pants. I actually like pink, but you can have too much of a good thing. This gi has just the right amount of very feminine and delicate stitching and patching.
  • The fabric is really soft. REALLY soft. You could wear it as pajamas. It’s 100% cotton and feels perfect. Plus, the pants are normal cotton, not the annoying rip stop pants.
  • The IBJJF has strict rules about where patches can be placed on a gi. This is because they want to make sure that all the gis are consistent and look the same. Unfortunately, some gi companies do not try hard enough to make their gis IBJJF approved. This means that if you buy a gi that is not approved, you might not be able to wear it in competitions. I’ve heard a story from the Worlds where people were trying to cut patches off their pants with nail clippers or else being forced to buy a new gi on the spot at premium prices. Eek!
  • Finding a gi that fits can be difficult. It is unclear to me why it is so hard to find a gi that fits perfectly, but it is. Women come in all shapes and sizes, but some gis fit better than others. I’m not saying the gi fits like a glove, but it is not huge and billowy like some of them, or too small like others.

Women’s BJJ Gi Buyer’s Guide

When it comes to finding the best BJJ Gi for women, there are many factors to consider. Not only do you need to find something that looks good and feels comfortable, but you also need something that will hold up well in competition.

What’s the Difference Between Men’s and Women’s BJJ Gi?

Let’s start with the basics: what do you need to look for in a good BJJ gi?

A good BJJ gi should be:

  • Comfortable
  • Lightweight
  • Breathable
  • Durable
  • Fit well

Anatomy

Women’s hips are typically wider than men’s, and their shoulders are narrower. Many women require additional space for their chests and behinds, to say nothing of the fact that men have longer arms (on average) than women. When you roll, one of the most common problems with a male size gi is that its sleeves are far too long because women’s arms (on average) are shorter than those of males. This is obviously distressing when you’re rolling because you won’t be able to break anyone’s sleeve grips and could even get your hand trapped in your own sleeve.

Size

Even the tiniest male gi size is probably too big for you if you’re a tiny woman. Obviously, you’d rather not walk around your BJJ class in a gi that’s excessively baggy because it isn’t fashionable right now and is inconvenient while rolling. This is why it’s important to find a gi that actually fits you.

Some women have wide shoulders in comparison to their hips, and they may be able to fit into a men’s gi just fine. In general, though, most women will require a gi that has been specifically designed for their bodies.

One final note on sizing: don’t forget about shrinkage! BJJ gis are made of cotton and will definitely shrink when you wash them (and sometimes even when you don’t wash them). If you’re on the fence about what size to get, it’s always better to err on the side of caution and get a gi that’s a bit too big rather than one that’s too small. You can always shrink it, but you can’t make it bigger.

Girly Design

In the past, women’s gis were often brightly colored and featured floral patterns or other “girly” designs. While there’s nothing wrong with looking good while you train, these types of gis can be a bit distracting when you’re trying to focus on your techniques.

I wouldn’t recommend getting a BJJ gi with a feminine design because as a woman, you’re already stand out enough in the world of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Furthermore, these unique designs are not legal for IBJJF competitions. But, if you like a particular gi style and feel comfortable wearing it to your martial arts school, go ahead and do it.

These days, there are a lot of women’s gis that have more subdued designs. You can still find some that are brightly colored or have patterns, but if you would prefer a more traditional look, there are definitely options out there for you.

Are BJJ gi unisex?

No, they are not. BJJ gis come in two main categories: those designed for men and those designed for women.

When it comes to finding the best BJJ Gi for women, the first thing you need to consider is the fit. Women’s gis are designed to fit the female form a bit better than men’s gis, so it’s important to find one that fits you well.

What do women wear under their BJJ gi?

Most women will wear a sports bra and compression shorts under their BJJ gi. This helps to keep everything in place and provides support and coverage. Additionally, some women choose to wear a rash guard under their gi to prevent chafing or discomfort.

Do I need a special BJJ Gi for competition?

No, you do not need a special BJJ Gi for competition. However, it is important to make sure that your Gi meets the requirements of the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation (IBJJF). The IBJJF has specific regulations regarding the size, color, and style of Gi that can be worn in competition.

Where Сan I Find a Female BJJ Gi Size Chart?

There are a few different places you can find a female BJJ gi size chart. One option is to search for one online. Another option is to ask your instructor or another experienced practitioner for help in finding the right size for you.
