Who Is Ed O’Neill and What Is His Background In BJJ?

Ed O’Neill is an American actor and comedian. He is best known for his role as Al Bundy on the hit TV show “Married with Children.” But what you may not know about him is that he is also a black belt in BJJ.

Ed O’Neill is a black belt in BJJ under Rorion Gracie. He got his black belt after 22 years, which is longer than the average time it takes to get a black belt. This means that he probably didn’t train as often as other people do. Ed O’Neill started training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu back in 1985 and was awarded his black belt in 2007. As you can see, becoming a black belt in BJJ is no easy feat.

O’Neill also said that his black belt was, “The greatest achievement of my life, apart from my children.” This shows that some things are more important to him than fame and money.

How Good Is Ed O’Neill Really?

Ed O’Neill is a decent BJJ practitioner. He’s a Gracie Jiu Jitsu black belt, which means he knows how to apply BJJ for self-defense and has good foundations. Of course, Ed is now quite old, so he doesn’t compete, and it’s unlikely that he does intense sparring. Nonetheless, he’s an excellent representative of Brazilian jiu jitsu.

Ed O’Neill Coaching BJJ and Training

In this video, you can watch Ed O’Neill with his BJJ coach Rorion Gracie practicing jiu-jitsu. Despite his advanced age, it’s apparent that Ed is familiar with his techniques and knows the fundamental principles of jiu-jitsu.

Ed also released a video about the new 32 Principles curriculum from Rener and Ryron. He goes through his ideas on the principles and how they might help you improve your jiu jitsu faster.

At the Gracie Academy Instructor Certification Program in Torrance, CA, on April 19th, Black Belt Ed O’Neill makes a surprise appearance before his weekly private lesson with Rorion Gracie. He tells the story of his first GJJ lesson with Rorion 16 years prior as if it were only yesterday.

Ed O’Neill as BJJ Celebrity

Ed O’Neill is one of the most well-known practitioners of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He’s an excellent ambassador for the sport. He’s famous, and he’s a nice guy, and we’re glad he found a home with the Gracie family. We’re also happy that the Gracies didn’t take it easy on Ed because he’s famous and still made him work hard to become a genuine BJJ black belt.
