In this article, we will be reviewing the Sanabul Essentials Gi, a different design that hopefully helps you find what you’re looking for in terms of Gi quality.

Size

The size fits well with A4 for those who are 6 ft or above but usually shrinks, so it fits even shorter individuals. No need to look around for special gi sizing. The normal sizing should have cuffs that are 1.5 inches away from your wrist bone.

It’s too small if the Gi’s cuffs are more than 2 inches away from the wrist bone. However, if the cuffs are 2 to 3 inches past the wrist bone, then the Gi is slightly oversized, but they should shrink with proper washing on a dry and heated wash. The Gi is too big if the cuffs are more than 3 inches past the wrist bone, so it’s best to buy a smaller size instead.

The Sanabul essentials gi has a very thick collar since it’s used as a weapon during rolling. Make sure to wash the gi in cold water. Keep in mind that with this gi, it will shrink but will stretch upon usage: the knees tend to stretch a lot since, in BJJ, you spend a lot of time on your knees.

The Sanabul logo is embroidered stylishly on the jacket. The gi fabric is with double stitching: the fabric material is pretty thick and pretty comfortable for guys just starting in BJJ. There’s no need to make it complicated; there’s certainly no shortage of all excess gi material in the market; the Sanabul gi, however, should be enough for anyone’s first year of BJJ.

The one thing with Sanabul gis is that the pants can be a little tighter at the butt area but still gets the job done since it stretches with usage.

The gi is a bit short on the waste, but it comes with a white belt provided with it. The belt sizes are a bit tricky sometimes: the A5 belts, for instance, are usually long, so A4 does fit pretty well.

The color of the gi is most probably not legal in the tournaments. Some tournament gis is usually a little more expensive. Sanabul does make some higher-end gi apparel that is great for tournaments. Tournaments usually require a particular gi category, depending on the competition.

This is because, in competition, it’s essentially a fight with a very aggressive pace at times, so the competition gi should withstand this type of intensity. Imagine going for a lapel grip; then the gi rips apart…It wouldn’t be an effective gi then.

Pros:

  • Great quality fabric
  • Durable
  • Great for BJJ beginners
  • Affordable

Cons:

  • Pants can be tight
  • Shrinks with washing
  • Not competition approved

Final Judgement: Worthy Gi?

If you’re looking for a good quality gi that will last you the first two years of BJJ training, then the Sanabul Essentials gi is a great pick. It ticks all the right boxes in terms of what to expect from a gi.
